Colombo’s technology scene is gaining international attention as a cluster of AI-focused startups has attracted over $45 million in venture capital funding in the first quarter of 2026 alone.

The Growing Ecosystem

At least 12 AI startups founded in Colombo have raised significant funding rounds, spanning applications in agricultural technology, healthcare diagnostics, and financial services.

The combination of strong English-language engineering talent, competitive operating costs, and the country’s strategic time zone position between Europe and East Asia has made Colombo an attractive base for AI ventures.

Key Players

Several firms have grown beyond the startup phase, with two companies now employing over 100 people each. International tech firms have also begun establishing AI research offices in the capital, drawn by university partnerships and the available talent pool.

Government Support

The government’s new Digital Innovation Fund has committed Rs. 2 billion to support early-stage technology companies, with AI ventures receiving priority consideration.
