The Attorney General has raised objections before the Supreme Court to a request seeking to prevent the Colombo High Court from proceeding with its case against Yoshitha Rajapaksa, Ada Derana reported.
Counsel representing Yoshitha Rajapaksa, a son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, had asked the Supreme Court for an order to stop the High Court trial from moving forward. The Attorney General opposed the application when the matter was taken up.
Yoshitha Rajapaksa faces money laundering allegations that have been contested through a series of preliminary objections and petitions over the past year. Earlier, the Court of Appeal dismissed a conspiracy-related petition connected to proceedings under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The Attorney General’s objection signals the prosecution’s determination to keep the case on track and resist attempts to delay or suspend the trial. The Supreme Court is expected to consider the arguments from both sides before ruling on whether the High Court proceedings may continue.
The case is among several involving members of the Rajapaksa family that remain before the courts as authorities pursue long-running financial investigations.
