Colombo Kaps captain Kusal Mendis has been ruled out of the remainder of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 after sustaining a hamstring injury, the Daily Mirror and Ada Derana reported.
The wicketkeeper-batsman picked up a right hamstring injury while attempting a run during the Kaps’ match against Kandy Royals at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground in Colombo on July 19. Following medical assessments, he has been withdrawn from the rest of the tournament and will return to the National High Performance Centre to begin his rehabilitation.
In his absence, Kamindu Mendis has been named to lead Colombo Kaps for the remaining fixtures.
The timing of the setback is a concern for Sri Lanka, coming just weeks before the national side hosts India in a two-match Test series starting on August 15. Mendis is a mainstay of the Test batting order, and ESPNcricinfo noted the injury casts doubt over his availability for the series.
Sri Lanka’s team management is expected to monitor his recovery closely in the coming weeks before finalising the squad for the India Tests.
