Sri Lanka have been handed a direct berth in the knockout stage of the men’s cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games, alongside India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
According to Ada Derana, the four sides have been seeded straight into the quarter-finals of the 10-team men’s tournament, which begins on September 24 in Nagoya, Japan. The arrangement rewards the region’s leading cricketing nations with a shorter path through the competition.
The remaining six teams — Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal and Oman — will contest a preliminary round for the other quarter-final places. The top two teams from each group in that stage will advance to join the four seeded sides in the knockouts.
Cricket’s inclusion at the Asian Games has given Sri Lanka another platform to compete for continental honours, and a favourable draw improves the team’s prospects of a deep run. The format spares the seeded nations the risk of an early exit while giving emerging cricketing countries a route into the latter stages.
Sri Lanka will look to build on their pedigree in the shortest formats when the tournament gets under way. Squad details and final scheduling for the Nagoya edition are expected closer to the event, with the men’s competition set to run alongside the wider Asian Games programme.
