A 49-year-old Dutch tourist has drowned while swimming at Nilaveli Beach in the Kuchchaveli Police Division, police said.
Kuchchaveli Police launched an investigation after receiving information on Sunday, July 26, that a foreign national had drowned while swimming in the sea.
Preliminary investigations found that the victim had been staying at a tourist hotel in the Nilaveli area.
Nilaveli, on the coast north of Trincomalee, is one of the east coast’s main beach destinations and draws visitors through the mid-year season when conditions on that side of the island are at their calmest. Currents off the stretch can nonetheless turn hazardous, and drownings involving swimmers unfamiliar with local conditions are reported periodically along both coasts.
Investigations are continuing.
