A 39-year-old man was killed when a cab veered off the Batticaloa–Kalmunai road and crashed at Thalavattuwan, police said.
The vehicle struck an iron pole supporting the signboard of a lottery sales booth, and then a nearby shop. A person inside the lottery booth at the time was injured and taken to Kalmunai Hospital for treatment.
The man who died was a resident of Polonnaruwa. Police are investigating.
Three killed in a day
The crash was one of three fatal or serious accidents police reported around the country on Monday, which together left three people dead and 19 injured.

Separately, 18 people were injured in the early hours of Monday when a private bus and a Sri Lanka Transport Board bus collided at Karadupana in Kegalle. The injured were taken to Kegalle Teaching Hospital, and no deaths were reported.
