Anguruwatota Police have arrested two men over an alleged attempt to smuggle heroin into the Kalutara Prison, stopping them at a checkpoint on the Millaniya-Batagoda Road.
Officers searched the pair and the motorcycle they were travelling on after noticing what police described as suspicious behaviour. They found 12,400 milligrams of heroin concealed in a small polythene packet of chilli paste, hidden inside two parcels of mixed rice.
Both suspects are residents of Horana, police said. They told officers they were on their way to visit their brother, who is serving a sentence at the Kalutara Prison for a drug-related offence.
Police seized the motorcycle and a mobile phone belonging to the suspects. Investigations have found that both men have court cases pending against them over drug offences.
The two are to be produced before the Horana Magistrate’s Court. Anguruwatota Police are continuing investigations.
Contraband at the prison gate
Attempts to move narcotics into Sri Lankan prisons through visitors and food deliveries are a recurring enforcement problem, and concealment inside meals is a familiar method — the packaging is routine enough to pass a casual inspection, and the quantities involved are small enough to be carried by a single visitor.
Police did not say whether the prisoner the suspects named was aware of the alleged attempt, and no charges relating to him have been reported.
