A 17-year-old has died following a collision between a motorcycle and a bus on Ahasyanapitiya Road in Mawathagama, police said.
The accident took place in front of a community hall when the motorcycle, travelling from Mawathagama towards Ahasyanapitiya, collided with a bus coming in the opposite direction.
The motorcyclist, a resident of Mawathagama, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Mawathagama Hospital before being transferred to Kurunegala Hospital for further treatment. He died while receiving treatment there.
A pillion rider who was injured in the collision also received medical attention. Police did not give the pillion riderβs age or condition.
Mawathagama Police have begun investigations into the circumstances of the crash. No arrest had been reported at the time of publication.
Road deaths remain a persistent public safety problem in Sri Lanka, with motorcyclists accounting for a disproportionate share of fatalities. A civil defence soldier was killed in a tipper collision in Ampara a day earlier.
