A suspect has been arrested with 12 kilograms of hashish worth more than Rs. 50 million in a raid carried out by the Special Task Force (STF) at Ambagahawatta in Minuwangoda.
The operation was conducted by officers of the STF Intelligence Division based at the Gonahena Camp, acting on information received.
According to the STF, the suspect was stopped while travelling on a motorcycle in Minuwangoda. A search carried out at the time of the arrest recovered six kilograms of hashish in his possession.
Further inquiries led officers to the suspect’s residence, where a second consignment of six kilograms was found, bringing the total seizure to 12 kilograms.
The suspect has been handed over to Minuwangoda Police for further investigation and legal proceedings. Police did not release his age or say whether he is believed to be linked to a wider trafficking network.
Part of a sustained crackdown
The seizure comes amid a continuing nationwide campaign against narcotics trafficking and organised crime. Officers also arrested a suspect at Boralesgamuwa this week in a case involving ice and weapons.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament on Wednesday that operations against drug trafficking would not be weakened by political pressure or threats.
