Fourteen people were hospitalised on Friday morning after a van carrying factory workers veered off the road and plunged down a precipice in the Udugalakanda area of Bulathsinhala.
Six of the injured were admitted to the Horana District Hospital and eight to the Bulathsinhala Divisional Hospital, Ada Derana reported. Twelve of those hurt are women; the other two are men, one of them the driver.
Police said none of the injured are in a serious condition.
The van was transporting workers from Udugalakanda to a factory when the accident occurred. The Daily Mirror reported that the vehicle’s brakes failed, causing the driver to lose control.
Bulathsinhala, in the Kalutara district, sits on hilly terrain where narrow roads run alongside steep drops. Factory transport vans carrying groups of workers on early-morning runs are common across the district’s plantation and industrial belt.
Police are investigating.
