Academic activities at the University of Peradeniya, suspended as a precaution during the current spell of adverse weather, will resume from August 10.
Vice Chancellor Professor Terence Madhujith said all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure teaching continues safely and without disruption from the reopening date.
The university suspended academic work as a precautionary measure amid the prevailing weather conditions rather than because of damage to the campus.
Weather across the central hills
Peradeniya sits on the Mahaweli Ganga just outside Kandy, in a catchment that has taken sustained rainfall over the past week. The Mahaweli rose high enough at the start of the month to affect the Peradeniya bridge and roads around Nawalapitiya, and heavy rain, strong wind and landslide advisories have covered parts of the Central province since.
Two reservoirs in neighbouring Badulla district began spilling on Friday, with the Irrigation Department warning downstream residents to monitor river levels.
The August 10 reopening coincides with the start of the GCE Advanced Level examination, held the day after the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination on August 9. Examinations officials, the Department of Meteorology and the Disaster Management Centre agreed contingency arrangements for both papers earlier this week, and the Supreme Court last week rejected a bid to postpone the A/L examination.
