Police have urged motorists not to watch cooking videos or any other entertainment while driving, warning that even a few seconds of distraction can have fatal consequences.
In a public safety message issued on Friday, police said that taking one’s eyes off the road to look at a video can cost a driver the crucial moments needed to avoid another vehicle, a pedestrian or another obstacle.
“Even if your attention is diverted from the road for just a few seconds because of a video you are watching, you lose valuable time to react and avoid danger,” police said.
The statement reminded drivers that they carry a responsibility not only for their own safety but for that of passengers, pedestrians and other road users.
Motorists were advised to leave videos and other entertainment until after their journey is complete. Videos can be watched later, police said, but “a life lost cannot be brought back”.
Police called on all road users to stay fully focused behind the wheel and to drive with care.
The advisory is the latest in a series of road safety messages issued by police in recent months, alongside enforcement drives covering speeding, helmet standards and restrictions on which vehicles and drivers may use the expressway network.
