Iran’s Mehr news agency has released a 12-second video clip of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, days after reports emerged claiming his health had taken a serious turn and that he could die within days.
The short, undated clip shows Khamenei in discussion with advisers and officials, appearing calm and in good health. Mehr said it was the first time such footage of the Supreme Leader had been released.
The agency did not disclose when or where the video was filmed.
No public appearance since the war began
Khamenei has not made a single public appearance since the US-Iran war broke out earlier this year, Ada Derana reported, citing The Indian Express.
He assumed the position after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike on the first day of the conflict on February 28. His own first message in the role, declaring a “final victory” over the United States and Israel, was read out on television in April rather than delivered in person.
Reuters reported in April that the new Supreme Leader was still recovering from severe facial and leg injuries sustained in the same strike, citing three people close to his inner circle. Those wounds were described as severe and disfiguring, raising questions at the time about his ability to project authority.
Why the footage matters
The release of even a few seconds of video is a departure for a leadership that has managed Khamenei’s absence through written statements and recorded messages. Uncertainty over the health and whereabouts of Iran’s most powerful figure has run alongside the diplomacy that followed the war, including the unresolved question of the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran has yet to reopen fully.
