A woman and her adult son were killed in the early hours of Tuesday when a private passenger bus collided with the motorcycle they were riding at Damanaya, Bakamuna, on the Dambulla–Mahiyanganaya main road.

The dead are a 63-year-old woman and her 43-year-old son, Hiru News reported.

A one-and-a-half-year-old child, the son of the man who was killed, was also on the motorcycle. He was seriously injured and admitted to Polonnaruwa Hospital.

Returning from a birthday party

The three were on their way home after attending a birthday party in the Kalundewa area when the crash occurred.

The bus was travelling from Colombo towards Kalmunai. Hiru reported that the motorcycle was ahead of the bus and was turning at Damanaya when the collision happened.

Bakamuna Police have arrested the driver of the bus and are investigating.

The report did not name the dead, give the condition of the injured child beyond describing his injuries as serious, or say how many passengers were aboard the bus.

A stretch with heavy through traffic

The Dambulla–Mahiyanganaya road carries long-distance bus services between Colombo and the east, and the Bakamuna section runs through Polonnaruwa District farming settlements where local motorcycle traffic mixes with fast-moving intercity buses.

The National Council for Road Safety reported 1,626 road accidents in the first seven months of 2026, up from 1,585 in the same period last year.
