The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the permanent appointment of H. C. P. Jayaweera as Director General of the Department of National Botanic Gardens, the Daily Mirror reported on Tuesday.
Jayaweera, a Grade I officer of the Sri Lanka Scientific Service, was first appointed to the post on a full-time acting basis after Cabinet approval at its meeting of December 30, 2024, and has served in the role since.
Promotion preceded the confirmation
The Public Service Commission promoted Jayaweera to the Special Grade of the Sri Lanka Scientific Service with effect from January 31, 2026. The permanent appointment as Director General is backdated to the same date, aligning the substantive posting with the grade promotion.
The Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Environment.
The department
The Department of National Botanic Gardens sits under the Ministry of Environment and manages Sri Lanka’s state botanical gardens, the best known of which are the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya and the gardens at Hakgala.
The gardens combine a public visitor function with plant conservation and research work. Peradeniya drew attention earlier this month when a giant orchid came into bloom there.
The post had been held on an acting basis for about 13 months before the effective date of the permanent appointment, with Tuesday’s decision formalising it more than six months after that date.
