A 78-year-old man has died after being attacked with a sharp weapon in the Thorapitiya area of Laggala, police said on Tuesday.
Officers took the seriously injured man to hospital, but he had already succumbed to his injuries by the time he was admitted, according to Ada Derana. The deceased was identified by police as a resident of the Ma Oya area.
Preliminary investigations indicate the attack was allegedly carried out by the manβs son-in-law, following an argument between the two that escalated.
The suspect has fled the area. Laggala Police are conducting further investigations and are working to trace and arrest him.
What police have not said
No arrest has been reported, and police have not released the names of the victim or the suspect, the exact time of the attack, or what the argument between the two men was about. Nor have they said whether the two lived in the same household or whether any earlier complaint had been made.
The allegation against the son-in-law rests on preliminary findings and has not been tested in court. No charges have been filed, and the account of the incident so far comes solely from police statements relayed through Ada Derana.
