Thirteen people were injured when a Sri Lanka Transport Board bus collided with a lorry in the Medawachchiya area, police said.
The lorry, which was carrying roof tiles, had been parked at the side of the road after a mechanical failure. According to preliminary investigations, the bus driver lost control and struck the stationary vehicle from behind.
The injured were taken to Medawachchiya and Vavuniya hospitals for treatment, NewsFirst reported. Police are investigating.
The report did not give the ages or condition of those hurt, say how many passengers were aboard the bus, or state whether either driver had been arrested. It also did not say how long the lorry had been stopped on the roadside or whether it had been marked with warning signs.
A run of crashes on Tuesday
The collision was one of several road accidents reported across the country on Tuesday. A 63-year-old woman and her adult son were killed at Bakamuna in the early hours when a private bus hit their motorcycle, seriously injuring a toddler travelling with them. Two motorcyclists, one of them 18, died in separate crashes at Dambulla and Udugama, and three pedestrians were hurt when a car mounted the roadside at Waskaduwa.
Medawachchiya sits on the A9, the main route north from Anuradhapura towards Vavuniya and Jaffna, a corridor that carries long-distance bus services alongside heavy goods traffic.
The National Council for Road Safety has recorded 1,626 road accidents in the first seven months of 2026, up from 1,585 in the same period last year.
