Three pedestrians were injured, two of them seriously enough to be hospitalised, when a luxury car crossed into the opposite lane and left the road on the Waskaduwa–Galle Road on Tuesday.
Police said the vehicle, which was travelling from Colombo towards Kalutara, crossed into the oncoming lane, struck the three pedestrians, hit two roadside boundary posts and then veered off the road.
Investigators suspect the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
The driver has been arrested and is to be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court.
Ada Derana’s report did not name the injured, give their ages, identify the hospital they were taken to, or say what time the crash occurred.
Road deaths under scrutiny
The crash is the latest in a run of serious incidents on Sri Lankan roads. Two people were killed in separate motorcycle accidents in Dambulla and Udugama reported the same week, and a mother and son died in a collision between a bus and a motorcycle at Bakamuna in the early hours of Tuesday.
Driver fatigue is a recurring finding in Sri Lankan crash investigations, particularly on long-distance routes along the southern coastal corridor.
