A 32-year-old man described by police as a close associate of the organised-crime figure and drug trafficker known as ‘Alto Dharme’ has been arrested in Mount Lavinia with 10 grams of crystal methamphetamine.

The suspect, a resident of Sri Indrajothi Road in Ratmalana, was arrested on Wednesday (12) by officers of the Mount Lavinia Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau during crime prevention and anti-corruption operations within the Mount Lavinia Police Division, police said.

Hiru News named the suspect as Mahamukulage Duminda Prasad Fernando and reported that the arresting team was led by Chief Inspector Nilantha Gamage, the officer in charge of the divisional crime investigation bureau. The Ice recovered from him was recorded as 10,000 milligrams — 10 grams.

Hiru gave the full name of the trafficker the suspect is linked to as Ellawala Liyanage Dharmasiri Perera, alias ‘Alto Dharme’.

‘Alto Dharme’ was arrested in Dubai in May along with his wife and two children, having been wanted on an Interpol Red Notice. Police have continued to move against members of his network in the months since.

Further investigations are under way.
