All train services on the Main Line were delayed on Thursday after a train broke down between the Ambepussa and Alawwa railway stations, Sri Lanka Railways said.
Ada Derana and Daily Mirror both placed the breakdown on the section between the two stations. Hiru News, citing the Railway Department, located the fault more precisely at Yatthalgoda and described it as a technical failure on the train.
Daily Mirror reported that railway authorities were taking steps to restore normal running, and that delays were expected to continue until the fault was cleared.
The Main Line is the country’s busiest rail corridor, carrying commuter traffic between Colombo and the Kandy and Northern lines, so a blockage on the Ambepussa–Alawwa stretch holds up services in both directions.
No injuries were reported. Sri Lanka Railways has not said how long the section is expected to remain affected, and no cause for the fault has been given.
