A four-year-old girl was found badly assaulted and abandoned on a by-road at Yatirawana in the Wattegama police division early on Thursday, police said.
Officers from the Wattegama Police Station recovered the child after a call to the police emergency line and took her into their care, according to Ada Derana. Hiru News reported that residents raised the alarm after hearing the child crying.
Police believe she was brought to the spot in a three-wheeler and left there. Ada Derana reported the time as around 7.00 a.m.; Hiru News put it at about 6.15 a.m., and said the three-wheeler drove off after the child was left behind.
Investigation
Investigators are examining CCTV footage in an effort to trace the three-wheeler suspected of transporting and abandoning her, police said.
The girl has not been able to give any information about her family or where she had been living, according to police. She has been admitted to the Kandy National Hospital for treatment.
No arrests have been reported. Wattegama Police are conducting further investigations.
