Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel to New Delhi to attend the BRICS Summit in September, Ada Derana reported on Friday, citing Iranian sources.
India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit under its 2026 chairship, which it assumed from Brazil at the start of the year. The summit is being held under the Indian theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.
Iran became a full member of the grouping in 2024 alongside Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia joined in 2025, bringing the bloc to 11 full members.
Follows June ministerial visit
Pezeshkian last met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024, where the two discussed bilateral and regional matters.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited India in June for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Speaking in the Indian capital afterwards, Araghchi said New Delhi’s influence as a global peacemaker was growing and that India could play a “greater role” in de-escalating tensions in West Asia. He said there was no military solution to the current crisis and that a negotiated settlement remained the only viable path, adding: “We will welcome any constructive role by India.”
Araghchi also held talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. In a post on X afterwards, he said he had “clarified that Iran will always carry out historical duty as protector of security in Hormuz,” describing Iran as a reliable partner on which friendly nations could rely for the safety of commerce.
The planned visit comes with West Asia in a precarious standoff. Sri Lankan interest in the region’s stability centres on the Strait of Hormuz, where attacks on ADNOC-chartered vessels have renewed concern over the shipping lane that carries a large share of the fuel imports the island depends on.
