A man who was shot and wounded on Huludagoda Road in Mount Lavinia on Saturday night has died of his injuries, police said.

The victim was admitted to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital after the attack but succumbed a short while later, Daily Mirror reported.

Unidentified gunman opened fire

Police said an unidentified gunman opened fire on the victim on Saturday evening. Ada Derana reported that the shooting occurred at around 9.50 p.m. inside a residence on Huludagoda Road.

Hiru News, citing police, placed the attack at a vehicle repair garage in the Huludagoda area. The two accounts of the location have not been reconciled by police, and no official statement has yet specified the exact premises.

The victim has not been named, and police have not disclosed a possible motive or said whether the gunman escaped on foot or by vehicle. No arrests have been reported.

Latest in a run of gun attacks

The killing is the latest in a series of shootings reported across the island this month. Gunmen opened fire in Tangalle’s Kudawella area on August 12, and a youth was wounded in a shooting in Weeraketiya on August 14.

Investigations are ongoing.
