Showers will occur at times in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts today, the Department of Meteorology said.
Several spells of showers may occur in the Western and North-Western provinces. In the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places after 2.00 p.m.
Winds of 30-40 kmph
Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the North-Central, North-Western, Central and Southern provinces and in the Trincomalee district, the department added.
The public has been asked to take adequate precautions to minimise damage from temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Rain against a dry backdrop
The forecast lands during a prolonged dry spell that has left more than 68,000 people affected across four districts and pushed national reservoir storage down to 37% of capacity.
The department has forecast that El Niño conditions will persist until next April, and a Cabinet sub-committee is due to review the weather situation on Monday. Met Department Director General Ajith Wijeweera has said dry conditions are expected to return in early September.
Separately, a marine Amber advisory issued on Friday remains relevant to fishing and naval communities, with gusts of up to 55-60 kmph forecast over two stretches of sea.
