Bangladesh have beaten Australia by nine wickets in the first Test in Darwin, their first Test victory on Australian soil and a result that has reshaped the World Test Championship standings Sri Lanka is competing in.
It was Bangladesh’s first win in Australia at the third attempt, and their first Test played in the country in 23 years, ESPNcricinfo reported. They had previously beaten Australia in a Test at home nine years ago.
How the match was won
Australia, put in first, were dismissed for 198. Hasan Mahmud took 6 for 55, with Steve Smith top-scoring on 71. Bangladesh replied with 426, built on a maiden Test century from opener Tanzid Hasan (101), 84 from captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and 65 from Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Josh Hazlewood claimed 6 for 89.
Australia made 284 in their second innings, with Cameron Green scoring 104. Mehidy took 5 for 66 and Mahmud a further 3 for 56, giving him nine wickets in the match. Daily Mirror identified Mahmud as player of the match.
Set 57 to win, Bangladesh reached the target for the loss of one wicket on the fourth afternoon.
Sri Lanka sixth as the table tightens
Australia remain top of the championship despite a second defeat of the campaign, but their points percentage fell from 87.50 to 77.78 — 84 points from nine matches — narrowing the gap to the chasing pack, Daily Mirror reported. South Africa are second.
Bangladesh are the main beneficiaries, moving to fourth on 66.67 percent from five matches. India are fifth on 48.15 percent, with Sri Lanka sixth on 41.67 percent as their own series against India continues. England (24.36), Pakistan (22.22) and the West Indies sit below them.
