A 12-year-old boy has died after falling from an apartment building in Colombo 09, police said.
The child had been at the swimming pool area of the 14-storey building with several other children when he fell, according to preliminary investigations. Ada Derana reported the pool as being on the rooftop, while Daily Mirror placed it on an upper floor of the building.
The boy was a resident of Colombo 09. Daily Mirror reported that he lived in the building from which he fell.
Maradana Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
The death comes during the school holidays, a period in which child-safety warnings have been repeated across several settings. The Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children issued an advisory the same day urging parents to supervise children flying kites, warning of falls from elevated positions and of contact between kite strings and power lines.
Accidental deaths of children have been reported repeatedly in recent weeks. A seven-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl drowned earlier this month when their family’s boat capsized in the Kalpitiya lagoon.
