Four people, including a six-year-old child, have died in three separate road accidents across Sri Lanka in the past 24 hours, police said.
Motorcycle hits pole in Kandakuliya
In the Kandakuliya area of Kalpitiya, a motorcycle travelling towards Kalpitiya veered off the road after the rider lost control and struck an electricity pole.
The rider and a six-year-old child riding with him were seriously injured and admitted to Kalpitiya Hospital, where both later died. The dead are a 40-year-old man and a six-year-old child, both residents of Kandakuliya.
Two cyclists killed by vans
A cyclist was killed while crossing the Colombo-Puttalam Road near Lunuwila Junction after being struck by a van travelling towards Puttalam. He died on admission to Marawila Hospital. Police believe he was between 55 and 60 years old; his identity has not been confirmed. The van driver has been arrested.
In Madampe town, a cyclist heading towards the Old Town area was knocked down by a van approaching from behind, which then fled the scene. The 62-year-old man, a resident of Madolkele, died after being admitted to Madampe Hospital. Police have since arrested the driver.
