A 51-year-old man has drowned while bathing in the sea at Nayaru Beach in Mullaitivu, police said.
The dead man was a resident of Achchuveli. Preliminary investigations found he had been living in Canada and had returned to Sri Lanka, police said.
He was on an excursion with a group of family members and friends when the incident occurred.
Mullaitivu Police are conducting further investigations.
The death adds to a run of drownings reported around the island in recent weeks, as dry weather draws bathers to rivers, lagoons and beaches. A 19-year-old died and another youth went missing after three young men got into difficulty bathing in the Ma Oya at Mirigama on Saturday. Earlier this month, a seven-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl drowned when their family’s boat capsized in the Kalpitiya lagoon.
