The Consumer Affairs Authority has seized vehicle spare parts and lubricants worth close to Rs. 5 million during a raid on a shop along the Kadawatha-Ganemulla Road, the Daily Mirror reported.

Officers of the CAA’s Competition Promotion Division carried out the raid at premises in the School Mawatha area after receiving information that substandard spare parts and lubricants were being sold and stored there.

Standards and pricing breaches alleged

The raid was conducted over several alleged offences, including selling and storing lubricants and vehicle spare parts in breach of Consumer Affairs Authority Orders No. 85 and 88, and failing to display product prices.

Officers sealed the seized stock and collected samples for further testing. The authority said legal action will be taken against the shop owner and the relevant sales representatives if the alleged offences are confirmed.

The CAA urged consumers to check the price, condition and applicable standards of vehicle spare parts and lubricants before buying them, and said information on shops suspected of selling substandard goods can be reported to its consumer hotline on 1977 during office hours.

Second CAA seizure reported in a day

The raid is the second Consumer Affairs Authority seizure reported on Tuesday. Officers working with the Department of Animal Production and Health separately seized 1,090kg of unregistered animal medicines valued at close to Rs. 3 million.

Both fall within a sustained enforcement run by the authority this month, which has included an unlicensed pharmaceutical warehouse in Havelock Town and fines over expired Ayurvedic medicines.

The Daily Mirror did not name the shop or its owner, and did not say how long the premises had been under observation.
