Showers will occur at times in Sabaragamuwa province and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts today, the Department of Meteorology said in its forecast for Tuesday.

Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and North-western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.

Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the island.

Winds and warnings

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, and in the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and the Trincomalee district.

The department asked the public to take adequate precautions to minimise damage from temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The forecast offers only patchy relief across a country still under sustained dry conditions. The Met Department has warned that Sri Lanka faces the strongest El Niño event in 75 years heading into the Maha season, and drought has already dried tanks and damaged crops across several districts. Today’s rain is confined largely to the south-west, leaving the worst-affected dry zone areas outside the shower band.
