Former Akkaraipattu mayor Athaullah Ahamed Saki has been remanded until September 1 after being produced before the Akkaraipattu Magistrate’s Court in connection with an investigation into an alleged rape dating back to 2021, NewsFirst reported.

The investigation concerns allegations that a female employee of the Akkaraipattu Municipal Council was sexually assaulted inside the former mayor’s office.

According to police, the woman, now 32, told investigators she was raped by the suspect in 2021 and was subsequently subjected to further sexual assaults on several occasions after being threatened and intimidated.

The case came to light following a complaint made to police after she was hospitalised in July, having attempted to take her own life.

The suspect is 43 years old and is a son of former minister A. L. M. Athaullah, NewsFirst reported.
