Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna National Organiser and Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa arrived at the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) on Friday morning, both Ada Derana and Daily Mirror reported.

His appearance followed a summons issued to him to record a statement in connection with an investigation the FCID is conducting, Ada Derana reported. Daily Mirror said he was expected to give a statement to investigators as part of that inquiry.

No details of the investigation disclosed

Neither outlet reported which matter the FCID is examining, and Daily Mirror said further details of the investigation had not been disclosed. No allegation against the MP has been stated by police in connection with Friday’s summons.

The FCID is the police unit that handles major financial and economic crime investigations, including cases involving public funds and alleged misuse of state assets.

Existing proceedings against the MP

Rajapaksa, a son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, is separately before the courts in a money laundering case. The Colombo High Court trial in that matter is set to resume on October 29.

Whether Friday’s summons relates to that case or to a distinct inquiry has not been reported. Investigations by the FCID do not in themselves indicate that charges will follow.

The MP has denied wrongdoing in the matters previously brought against him. He was among the candidates in the 2024 presidential election and remains one of the SLPP’s most prominent figures in Parliament.
