Sri Lanka Police have appealed to the public for information to help locate three Chinese nationals wanted in connection with an abduction and murder at Colombo Port City in July.

Police said the incident occurred on July 23, when a group of three Chinese nationals was attacked. One of the men was abducted and later killed.

The Colombo Crimes Division has arrested two suspects, both of whom have been remanded. Investigators are continuing efforts to locate three further suspects believed to have been involved.

Police said the three wanted men entered Sri Lanka on tourist visas that have since expired, and expressed concern that they may attempt to leave the country illegally by air or sea. Photographs and identifying details of the three have been released.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Officer-in-Charge of the Colombo Crimes Division on 071-8591735.

Case background

The victim was taken from the Port City area in the early hours of July 23 after a confrontation between two groups of Chinese nationals. His body was recovered near Eheliyagoda, about 60 kilometres from Colombo.

Investigators later said the man had entered Sri Lanka from Cambodia in April on a Suriname passport and was suspected of involvement in computer-based fraud.

By the end of July, police were searching for six people, with three believed to still be in Sri Lanka under a travel ban and three others traced abroad with Interpol assistance. Friday’s public appeal is the first time photographs of wanted suspects in the case have been released.

The killing came as police reported a sharp rise in crimes involving foreign nationals, with roughly 700 foreign nationals arrested this year in raids linked to scam operations run from rented accommodation.
