The Department of Meteorology says several spells of showers will occur on Sunday in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
A few showers may also occur in the North Western Province, the department said. Showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places in the Ampara, Monaragala and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.
Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the island.
Winds of 30-40 kmph across five areas
Fairly strong winds of about 30 to 40 kilometres per hour can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central, Central and North-Western provinces, and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.
The department has asked the public to take adequate precautions to minimise damage from the temporary localised strong winds and lightning that can accompany thundershowers.
Sunday’s outlook repeats the province and district list issued for Saturday, with the North Western Province added to the shower forecast. The wind advisory has shifted north, dropping the Mannar and Matale districts named on Saturday and extending instead across the Northern and Central provinces.
The forecast comes as much of the island remains dry. Polonnaruwa recorded the country’s highest temperature at 37.2°C on Saturday, and the Disaster Management Centre has reported more than 81,000 people affected by the deepening dry spell.
