The Department of Examinations has published the dates for all major school examinations to be held in 2027, giving candidates and schools close to a year’s notice.

According to a statement issued on Monday, the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination will be held on August 1, 2027. The G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination is scheduled from August 3 to August 28, 2027, and the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination from December 7 to December 17, 2027. The General Information Technology (GIT) Examination will be held on October 24, 2027.

The schedule was announced by Commissioner General of Examinations A.K.S. Indika Kumari Liyanage. Ada Derana and Daily Mirror reported identical dates for all four examinations.

Firmer dates than the term calendar carried

The announcement sharpens a picture set out three days earlier. The Ministry of Education’s 2027 school term calendar, issued as Circular No. 31/2026 on August 21, placed the A/L examination in August 2027 and the O/L examination in December 2027 but did not give specific dates. It also made no mention of the Grade 5 Scholarship or GIT examinations, both of which now have fixed dates.

The two documents line up. The term calendar sets the second-term school holiday from July 31 to August 29, 2027 — a window that now contains both the Scholarship examination on August 1 and the full A/L period. The third term runs from August 30 to December 3, ending days before the O/L examination begins on December 7.

Publishing examination dates this far ahead gives schools, candidates and families a fixed reference for the year, including the revision and tuition schedules that typically build around the A/L and O/L periods.

Neither newsroom reported the number of candidates expected to sit each examination, or the dates on which applications will open.
