Police have arrested a man alleged to be a distributor in the drug network run by the organised crime figure known as “Badowita Asanka”, recovering more than 15 grams of methamphetamine, or “ice”, in his possession.
The suspect, named as Lakmal, was detained by the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit, Hiru News reported. The raid followed information received by the unit’s Officer-in-Charge, Chief Inspector Indika Weerasinghe, and was carried out under the direct supervision of the unit’s director, Assistant Superintendent of Police Rohan Olugala.
The alleged role
Preliminary investigations indicate the suspect worked as a distributor within the network and handed the daily income generated from the operation back to Badowita Asanka, according to the report.
That detail is the substance of the case as police have put it so far. No court appearance, charges or remand order had been reported at the time of writing, and police did not disclose the suspect’s age, his home area, or how long he is alleged to have operated within the network.
Investigation continues
The suspect is being held for questioning at the Mount Lavinia Police Headquarters, where further investigations are under way.
Badowita Asanka is a long-standing target of Sri Lankan narcotics operations, and associates of the network have been arrested in separate police and Special Task Force operations in previous years. Police have not said in this instance whether the arrest brings them closer to the network’s leadership or where the seized consignment originated.
