Officers from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption visited the Parliament Road residence of MP Ravi Karunanayake on Saturday after he failed to appear before the commission as required by a notice.
Karunanayake had been formally notified to appear before CIABOC but did not do so, Ada Derana reported. A team of commission officers went to his home the same day.
The officers left without meeting him. According to the Daily Mirror, they departed after finding that the MP was not in Colombo — a close associate said Karunanayake had already left the city by the time they arrived.
What the outlets did not say
Neither report identified which investigation the notice relates to, what Karunanayake was required to give evidence on, or whether he had given the commission any reason for not attending. Neither outlet carried a comment from the MP or from CIABOC on what happens next.
Background
Karunanayake, a former finance minister, sits on parliamentary committees and has been an active questioner of the government on economic policy in the current Parliament. He has appeared in several matters before investigators and the courts in recent years.
In June the Supreme Court addressed the prosecution of the treasury bond case involving former Central Bank governor Arjuna Mahendran and Karunanayake. He has separately been a prominent voice in Parliament on the NDB fraud and Central Bank oversight and on foreign exchange regulation.
