A 17-year-old school student has been killed with a sharp weapon in Eheliyagoda, police said, in an attack carried out at his home early on Sunday morning.

The victim was an Advanced Level student at Eheliyagoda National School, Daily Mirror reported. He was admitted to the Eheliyagoda Base Hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries.

According to preliminary investigations reported by Daily Mirror, the killing followed an argument that arose after another person allegedly recorded a video on Saturday evening near the Aarapola school junction, showing a youth talking to two young women. Police said the suspect went to the student’s home early the following morning, attacked him with a sharp weapon and fled the area.

Ada Derana reported the killing in less detail, placing it in the Nadurana area of Eheliyagoda and describing the cause only as a dispute between two groups that escalated. It identified the deceased as a resident of Arapola, Eheliyagoda — the same locality Daily Mirror renders as Aarapola.

Eheliyagoda Police are conducting further investigations to arrest the suspect, who remains at large.

What the two accounts do not settle

The outlets give different accounts of the dispute. Daily Mirror describes a specific argument between individuals over a recorded video; Ada Derana describes a confrontation between two groups. Neither names the suspect, says how many people were involved, or reports whether the person who filmed the video and the person who carried out the attack are the same.

Neither report names the victim. Ada Derana’s placing of the killing in Nadurana and Daily Mirror’s account of an attack at the student’s residence in the Aarapola area are not reconciled in either report.
