A National People’s Power member of the Vadamarachchi Pradeshiya Sabha has been arrested by Nelliady Police in Jaffna over an alleged night-time intrusion at the home of a retired government official.
The Daily Mirror named the member as Ganesaruban and identified his council as the Vadamarachchi South-West Pradeshiya Sabha. Ada Derana referred to the body only as the Vadamarachchi Pradeshiya Sabha.
What police say happened
According to the Daily Mirror, the member and several friends allegedly entered the house in the Nelliady town area at around midnight on Sunday while under the influence of alcohol. They are accused of damaging the property’s security camera, forcing their way onto the premises and issuing death threats to the occupants.
Ada Derana’s account is narrower, describing the arrest as being connected to an alleged incident involving damage to a security camera at the residence of a retired government official.
The two outlets also differ on how the complaint reached police. The Daily Mirror said the homeowner called the 119 emergency police hotline; Ada Derana said the official lodged a complaint with Nelliady Police.
Officers who arrived at the scene arrested those allegedly involved and took them to the police station for questioning.
Released on bail, court on Monday
Ada Derana, filing later in the day, reported that those arrested were subsequently released on police bail and instructed to appear before court on Monday. The Daily Mirror’s earlier report said police had begun proceedings to produce them before the court but did not mention bail.
Neither outlet reported how many people were arrested alongside the council member, and neither named the retired official.
The Daily Mirror’s report carried a byline from Thevatharsan Sukinthan. Police have not issued a statement on the charges the group will face.
