Four people were injured and admitted to the Mawanella Base Hospital on Monday afternoon after a head-on collision in the Gadol Bridge area of Mawanella, Ada Derana reported.

A hospital spokesperson said one of the injured is in a critical condition.

How the collision happened

Mawanella Police said a van travelling from Aranayaka towards Mawanella town collided head-on with a tipper truck carrying sand, which was travelling in the opposite direction from Mawanella towards Ussapitiya.

All four of the injured were occupants of the van. Police said the tipper truck had been transporting sand under a valid permit.

Mawanella Police are continuing investigations.

What has not been reported

Ada Derana did not report the ages or identities of the injured, whether the drivers of either vehicle were among them, or whether either driver has been arrested. It did not say what caused the vehicles to collide, or whether the road was closed.

The reference to the sand permit is the only detail police offered about the tipper. Sand transport permits are a standing enforcement issue in the river districts, and police routinely note permit status when a tipper is involved in an incident; the report does not connect the permit to the cause of the collision.

No other verified Sri Lankan newsroom had reported the accident at the time of writing.
