Several spells of showers will occur in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts on Monday, the Department of Meteorology said.
A few showers may occur in the North-western province. Showers or thundershowers are possible at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts after 2.00 p.m. Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the island.
Winds and lightning
Fairly strong winds of about 30–40 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the North-central and North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.
The department asked the public to take adequate precautions against damage from temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sun overhead
The sun is passing directly over Sri Lankan latitudes between 28 August and 7 September as it moves south. On Monday it will be overhead at Neriyakulam, Punewa, Kebithigollewa, Pankulam and Sinhapura at about 12.10 p.m.
The rainfall pattern is consistent with the south-west of the island staying wet while the dry zone remains largely rain-free — the same split that has run through recent forecasts. The National Dengue Control Unit cited intermittent rainfall in the south-west on Monday as a reason for instructing schools to clear mosquito breeding sites before the new term.
