A 23-year-old man has been arrested in Ahungalla with three different narcotics after officers stopped his motorcycle at a roadblock, police said.
Officers attached to the Ahungalla Police Station were checking vehicles at the Elathota Junction roadblock when they searched a motorcycle they considered suspicious, Ada Derana reported.
What was seized
Police recovered 1 kilogram and 194 grams of “Ice” — crystal methamphetamine — along with 217 grams of heroin and 101 grams and 270 milligrams of kush, according to both Ada Derana and NewsFirst. The two outlets gave identical quantities for all three substances.
The motorcycle was also taken into police custody. The suspect is a resident of the Watugedara area, in the same coastal stretch of Galle District. Ahungalla Police are continuing investigations.
Neither outlet reported where the drugs were being taken, whether the suspect has been produced in court, or whether anyone else is being sought.
Context
The seizure is small next to the consignments intercepted at the ports, but the Ice quantity is substantial for a roadside stop. Sri Lankan authorities are running sustained narcotics operations: last week customs and police seized 463 kilograms of Ice in a container at Colombo Port, a haul valued at more than Rs. 8 billion, and police have reported 531,116 narcotics arrests since the government took office in September 2024.
Kush, a synthetic cannabinoid mixture, has appeared in a growing number of Sri Lankan seizures this year alongside the established Ice and heroin trade.
A note on place names: Ada Derana renders the roadblock location “Elathota Junction” while NewsFirst gives it as “Elatota Mandiya” — the same location, with mandiya being the Sinhala word for junction.
