Several spells of showers will fall in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts on Tuesday, the Department of Meteorology said.
Showers or thundershowers are possible at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts after 2.00 p.m. Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the island.
Winds of 30 to 40 kmph
Fairly strong winds of about 30 to 40 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the North-central and North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.
The department asked the public to take adequate precautions against damage from temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
An unchanged outlook
Tuesday’s bulletin repeats Monday’s forecast almost word for word — the same provinces and districts for showers, the same 2.00 p.m. threshold in the east, and the same wind speeds over the same areas. The synoptic situation has not moved.
The one element that does change daily is the sun’s position. It is passing directly over Sri Lankan latitudes between 28 August and 7 September as it tracks south. On Tuesday it will be overhead at about 12.10 p.m. over Kalpitiya, Talawa, Sinharagama, Galkadawala, Nachchaduwa, Padikaramaduwa, Gomarankalla and Verugal — further west and south than Monday’s line through Neriyakulam, Punewa, Kebithigollewa, Pankulam and Sinhapura.
Both Ada Derana and Hiru News carried the bulletin with identical district lists and the same overhead locations, which confirms this as a fresh issue rather than a repeat of the previous day’s notice.
The pattern keeps the south-west of the island wet while the dry zone stays largely rain-free. That split matters for the north-central districts, where 612 tanks in Anuradhapura are below five per cent capacity — the areas forecast for strong winds on Tuesday are the same ones getting no rain.
