The National Freedom Front (NFF) will take part in a rally organised by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on 12 September, party leader Wimal Weerawansa has said.
Weerawansa said the NFF’s Political Council had agreed to accept the SLPP’s invitation and support the event, describing the decision as intended to encourage greater cooperation among opposition groups on issues of national importance, the Daily Mirror reported.
The criticism
Weerawansa said the public had elected the present Government with high expectations, particularly after the country’s economic crisis and amid demands for action against corruption.
He alleged the Government had failed to meet some of those expectations and had not delivered adequately on its anti-corruption promises.
Why the alignment is notable
The NFF and the SLPP have spent much of the current parliamentary term operating separately rather than as partners, and Weerawansa has previously kept his distance from the SLPP. A joint appearance is therefore a marker of consolidation on the opposition side rather than a routine scheduling item.
A crowded Saturday
The rally falls on a day that has been building into a set-piece contest. Namal Rajapaksa said on 10 September that the SLPP’s September 12 campaign would go ahead after a venue in Anuradhapura was refused, and the President is due to address an NPP farmers’ rally in Polonnaruwa the same day — two neighbouring North Central districts, two competing shows of strength, on one afternoon.
Namal Rajapaksa is in remand custody, with his case due to be taken up again on 18 September.
Not reported
The Daily Mirror does not say where the SLPP rally will be held, at what time, or whether the venue question raised on 10 September has been resolved. It does not say whether Weerawansa himself will attend or address the rally, or how many NFF members are expected.
It does not report whether other opposition parties have received or accepted the same invitation, whether the two parties have agreed anything beyond joint attendance, or whether this signals a wider electoral alliance. The SLPP’s own account of the invitation is not given, and there is no government response.
Update, 12 September: Weerawansa attended in person
The rally went ahead in Anuradhapura on Saturday, and Weerawansa was there himself — answering the question this report left open. He appeared alongside former Ministers Udaya Gammanpila and Tiran Alles, MP Ramanathan Archchuna and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who joined the gathering during the afternoon.
