A 37-year-old woman has died after the motorcycle she was riding collided with a van carrying a group of Indian tourists towards Nuwara Eliya, Hiru News reported on Saturday, citing Nanu Oya Police.
The victim, a resident of Nanu Oya, suffered severe injuries and was admitted to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital, where she later died.
The crash occurred at around 10.00 a.m. on Saturday near the Nanu Oya railway bridge on the Hatton–Nuwara Eliya main road.
Nanu Oya Police said reckless driving by the van driver caused the collision, which left both vehicles extensively damaged. The driver has been arrested and is to be produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court.
The finding of fault is preliminary
The attribution of the crash to the van driver’s driving is the police account at the scene, given the same day. It is a preliminary determination rather than a court finding, and the case has yet to be heard. The driver has been arrested but no charge has been reported.
A route under pressure
The Hatton–Nuwara Eliya road is the main approach to the hill capital from the south-west and carries a heavy mix of tourist transport, local motorcycles and goods vehicles on narrow, curved hill sections. The stretch near the Nanu Oya railway bridge sits where that road and the upcountry rail line converge, close to the station used by visitors arriving on the Kandy–Badulla line.
The death lands the same day that the government announced Rs. 1.5 billion for fixing dangerous locations on roads outside the national network and the Inspector General of Police called for road discipline to be taught in schools. Neither report references this crash, and the Hatton–Nuwara Eliya road is a national road, which would place it outside the scheme announced on Saturday.
