Two 15-year-old boys are missing after separate drowning incidents on Saturday in the Weligama and Payagala police areas, Hiru News reported. Joint search operations involving police, the Sri Lanka Navy and local residents were under way on Sunday.
Weligama: a river, not the sea
The Weligama boy went missing while fishing with two friends in a tributary of the Polwathumodara River, near the Dambokka Nugaduwa bridge. NewsFirst, which reported the incident first at 6.16 p.m. on Saturday while the search was already running, places it at the Ilwatta Anicut on Nugaduwa Road and says it happened that afternoon.
The two accounts describe the same incident and the same boy. They do not agree on where he was from: NewsFirst says he is a resident of Deniyaya, some 40km inland in Matara District, while Hiru identifies him as a resident of Denipitiya, a village within Weligama itself. Neither outlet acknowledges the other’s version. The distinction is not trivial — whether the boy was local to the waterway or a visitor to it bears on how well he would have known the anicut.
Payagala: swept out while sea bathing
Payagala Police said the second boy was swept away by waves while sea bathing with a group of friends along the Kuda Payagala coastal stretch in Kalutara District. He is also 15, and a resident of Kuda Payagala.
Rough water, but no stated link
The incidents fall in a week of heavy weather along the same coast. Forecasts of falls exceeding 100mm across the south-west have been accompanied by NBRO landslide warnings for several districts, and minor flood warnings were issued on Sunday for low-lying areas of the Gin Ganga basin — the next river system north of the Polwathumodara.
No outlet connects the drownings to the weather, and neither report mentions river levels, currents or sea conditions at either location. The link is not established and is not asserted here.

Also unstated: the exact times of both incidents, whether either was recovered overnight, how many Navy personnel are deployed and at which location, whether the friends present in either group needed rescue, whether warning signage or lifeguard cover exists at Kuda Payagala, and whether the Weligama anicut has a history of drownings.
This is the second multiple-victim drowning story in the same week, after four people went missing in the Ma Oya at Badalgama on Friday.
