The National Water Supply and Drainage Board will cut the water supply to five areas of the Anuradhapura district for eight hours on Wednesday to carry out maintenance at the Kalawewa Water Treatment Plant.
Supply will be suspended from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on 23 September in Ihala Gama, Kalawewa, Maradankadawala, Thirappane and Kekirawa, the Board said in a notice reported by Daily Mirror.
The NWSDB described the work as essential maintenance and asked residents in the affected areas to store enough water in advance. It also asked the public to use water sparingly until the supply is fully restored — the standard request when a treatment plant restarts, since pressure and turbidity take time to settle back across a distribution network.
What the notice does not say
The Board gave no description of the maintenance work and no indication of whether it is planned or corrective. It did not say how many households or connections are affected, and it named no bowser points or alternative supply arrangements for the eight-hour window.
Nor does the notice say whether the interruption is linked in any way to the rain now falling across much of the country. The Kalawewa plant draws from the Kala Wewa reservoir system in the North Central dry zone, an area the Met Department has forecast will see several spells of showers this week as the Bay of Bengal system deepens offshore.
Residents are advised to treat the 4.30 p.m. restoration time as the start of the refill, not the moment taps return to full pressure. No verified newsroom other than Daily Mirror has carried the notice.
