Police have taken custody of a consignment of narcotics imported into Sri Lanka through a private courier service, in a joint operation with Customs officers, NewsFirst reported on Wednesday.
The haul was 3 kilograms and 599 grams of Kush and 2 kilograms and 409 grams of hashish.
How it was found
The consignment was not intercepted on arrival. Police said it surfaced during an investigation opened on information obtained from a suspect who had already been arrested for possessing narcotics.
Officers of the Western Province North Crimes Division followed that information to a shipment being held at Customs, and recovered it with the assistance of Customs officials. It has been taken into police custody for further investigation.
Context
Kush is a synthetic cannabinoid preparation rather than herbal cannabis, and has become a recurring feature of parcel-borne seizures in Sri Lanka because it is compact and easily concealed in small consignments.
The same police division ran the operation that, a day earlier, traced a man arrested with 5.6 grams of Ice to an alleged supplier at Webada, Weliweriya, and recovered seven locally made firearms, more than 500 rounds of ammunition and two kilograms of heroin. Both cases followed the same method — working upward from a small possession arrest.
Police have not said where the consignment was shipped from, who it was addressed to, or whether anyone has been arrested over the import.
