Will Jacks scored an unbeaten 46 and then took five wickets for 22 runs as England beat Sri Lanka by 89 runs in the first one-day international at Chester-le-Street on Monday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

England, batting first, were bowled out for 265 in 48.1 overs. Sri Lanka, chasing 266, were dismissed for 176 in 37 overs, according to the full scorecard.

Jacks was named Player of the Match for a return of 46 not out from 47 balls and figures of 5 for 22 from seven overs.

England’s innings

Captain Harry Brook top-scored with 67 from 69 balls, including seven fours, and shared the innings’ most substantial stands after England lost Tom Banton for 10 inside the third over. Joe Root made 44 from 52 and Ben Duckett 32 from 29.

England were well placed when Brook holed out to deep cover off Dushmantha Chameera in the 32nd over, the fourth wicket down at 182. Two more fell for 17 runs — Jos Buttler lbw to Colombage for 31, and Rehan Ahmed run out by Charith Asalanka — leaving England 199 for 6.

Jacks rebuilt from there, adding 66 runs for the last four wickets alongside the tail. Asitha Fernando removed Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue in the closing overs to finish with 3 for 53.

Sachindu Colombage, playing his first ODI for Sri Lanka, was the other three-wicket taker with 3 for 44 from his ten overs, dismissing Root, Buttler and Jamie Overton.

Sri Lanka’s reply

Sri Lanka lost Kamindu Mendis in the sixth over and never established a stable platform. Pathum Nissanka made 27 from 37 before edging Tongue to the wicketkeeper.

From 84 for 3 in the 20th over, Sri Lanka slid to 105 for 6 — Asalanka lbw to Jacks for 1, Janith Liyanage caught behind for 4, and captain Kusal Mendis lbw to Jacks for 42 from 60 balls, the innings’ second-highest score.

Dunith Wellalage offered the only sustained resistance, striking 45 from 36 balls to lift Sri Lanka from 133 for 7. His dismissal, caught by Overton off Jacks at 176, triggered the finish: the last three wickets fell on the same score of 176, across four deliveries in the 37th over. Hiru News noted that no other Sri Lankan batter reached 30.

Overton took 2 for 21. Both innings included nine extras.

Series context

The defeat follows a 3-0 whitewash in the T20I series, and continues a difficult tour for a side rebuilding under coach Gary Kirsten. Kusal Mendis had returned from a hamstring injury to captain the team in this match.

Two ODIs remain in the series.

Caveats

The Sinhala-language Hiru report and the ESPNcricinfo scorecard agree on every figure cited here; both innings totals reconcile exactly against their batting columns (England 256 off the bat plus nine extras; Sri Lanka 167 plus nine), and the 89-run margin matches the difference between the two totals. Neither source gives the toss result.
