The President’s Fund will begin its district-level recognition of students who topped the 2025 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination with a ceremony in Kilinochchi on September 26, the government news portal News.lk reported.
Each selected student receives Rs. 100,000 in financial assistance and a certificate of recognition. Close to 3,000 students from every district in the country are due to be honoured in this cycle.
The scheme has been widened since its first year. Launched in 2025 under the chairmanship of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, it initially recognised the ten highest performers in each subject stream in each district, drawn from the 2023/2024 Advanced Level cohort. That figure has now been doubled to 20 students per subject stream per district.
The Fund said the programme is intended to identify and encourage the talents of young people preparing to take on responsibility for the country’s future, and to give them the support needed to continue their education.
It also plans to extend the scheme to the provincial level in future years, though no timetable was given.
Beginning the island-wide round in Kilinochchi places the first ceremony in one of the country’s smallest and least-resourced education districts, in the Northern Province. The announcement did not say when the remaining district ceremonies will be held, or list the subject streams covered.
The President’s Fund also finances medical assistance, scholarships and equipment grants. It has featured in a run of announcements this year, including laptop awards to university students and support for spectacles and hearing aids.
